Severe winters can wreak havoc on our roadways. After a busy winter season, the County can receive more than 150 reports of potholes a day for several weeks. Every effort is made to repair potholes as quickly as possible and we encourage residents to report them whenever they see one.
Some claims are made each year by drivers alleging that potholes on County roads have damaged their vehicles. The County’s Office of Risk Management makes its determinations on a case by case basis. Under sovereign immunity, the County only considers payment of claims in that small percentage of cases where it can be shown that the damage was caused by a pothole that had been reported and had gone unrepaired for an unreasonable length of time.
